An award nomination!

Well it's been a while! Its a very busy place at the moment, (not that I'm complaining) so it takes some 'getting round to' to keep the blog updated.

This year Emmie from The Prince's Trust nominated Clare for 'Young Achiever of the Year' in the Celebrate Success awards for Yorkshire and Humber. I don't know whether there was more excitement over the award nomination, or the fact that it had 'young' in the title!

Anyhow, at the beginning of September we were notified that Clare had made the final four for the award, and we are to attend the awards ceremony on 4th November at The Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Clare says it would be a great award to win, but there is some stiff competition, and very deserving entrants. For more information about the Prince's Trust please visit www.princes-trust.org.uk.

Our supporters recognised in local paper.

You may or may not be aware that Binns-Tomlinson is both a Prince's Trust, and a Growing Routes supported company. When the idea was born we approached Business Link for advice, and were put in touch with agents from these charities. On developing business plans, attending panels, and presenting our ideas we were given the 'go ahead' and the funding, without which we would have had considerably less training equipment, a struggle to fund the HSE approval process, and a more than a few grey hairs and sleepless nights!

Growing Routes gave us valuable advice about the creation and completion of the business plan, and The Prince's Trust have provided us with a fantastic mentor, and input from a variety of different sources.

When the Prince's Trust PR department contacted me (Clare) a couple of months ago to ask me to say a few words about the support I have received from them I did not hesitate to sing their praises! Nevertheless it was a bit of a shock when I opened the Harrogate Advertiser Business Pink in May and found a picture of me, under the title 'Harrogate mum's praise for Prince's Trust scheme'! I had not realised the article would be circulated to local papers, and assumed it was for the Prince's trust publications!

Not one to complain about the publicity, I am very pleased the paper decided to run the story, but after all the ribbing I have received from my wonderful business partner about the beauty of the picture I am just plotting how to take my revenge......! Please post ideas below!

Yorkshire Business Market

Monday 28th April saw the relaunch of the Harrogate Business Market as the Yorkshire Business Market due to it's continuing growth and success. Of course never wanting to miss out, we at Binns-Tomlinson had a stand in one of the four rooms filled with 150 stands for various different business to business marketing and networking opportunities.

It was a very busy market, opened by Phil Willis, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, and with great thanks to Brian Dunsby and the Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce for organising the event so well.

So how was it for us? Well we talked, and talked, and talked until we were exhausted (not often known for the Binns-Tomlinson gang), but we met lots of potential contacts and hopefully raised the profile further.

We arranged a business card prize draw to win a Farrah's hamper, which went down very well. It was won by Jackie Snape from Disability Action Yorkshire, well done to her, (and to us for managing to share a stall with the hamper all day and not eat it!)

On the must do better list, a more inspiring stand for next year we think! (Photos will be posted soon and you'll see what we mean!) Next year we are going for out and out how to make Health and Safety fun and interesting....bet that'll encourage you to watch this space!

Website launch

Well it's a busy old life in the world of safety training. The new website launched on Friday, and we are just getting to grips with the changeover. This is third time lucky for Binns-Tomlinson with websites. It takes planning, and research to find the right designer, and we think that this time we've finally done it! Just click through to http://www.safetytrainingservicesltd.co.uk/ and then come back here and tell us what you think! All comments on ease of navigation, usefulness of information, etc are welcome!

Another important announcement for us is the imminent launch of Kids Saving Lives, as mentioned last month. Kids Zone at the Harrogate Advertiser has been kind enough to launch a competition for the design of a logo to accompany the 'Kids Saving Lives' title. The Kids Saving Lives concept is about teaching young people basic life saving skills. The aim is to increase awareness of First Aid practices, and to encourage young people to get involved with basic life support. Up to 100 000 people in the UK suffer a sudden cardiac arrest each year, yet the survival rate is 2.5-5%. Shocking statistics I am sure you will agree. We want to encourage a culture of teaching and learning the skills that could save someone's life, and that is what Kids Saving Lives is aiming to do. Initially the campaign will be delivered to Harrogate schools, with the eventual aim being to roll Kids Saving Lives out nationwide. For more information or to get involved please contact us. We will post some of the best designs on the blog next month to showcase the talent of the young artists of Harrogate!

Hello!

Welcome to our blog! It's our chance to tell you what happens in the world of this business, and your chance to pick up information about changes in the Health and Safety Industry, top tips, top myths, and even some horror stories. Feel free to post your comments or queries, we'll aim to reply within a week.

So we're in our fourteenth month of training now, and planning again. There's always plenty to do, marketing, designing courses, book keeping, writing blogs!

Keep an eye out for the new website, launching soon at http://www.safetytrainingservicesltd.co.uk/. It's a fantastic site, designed for us by Extreme Creations in Harrogate (http://www.extreme-creations.co.uk/) and will be alot more user friendly than the current site. (It'll work for a start!) There's loads of information about courses, and help on what course will suit your needs, there's online booking available, and latest news. And there is a little bit of flash player (which I am extremely excited about!)

We also have a new campaign to talk about, Kids Saving Lives, launching in April, but we'll start giving details out about that over the next few days. Hope you'll keep joining us.
